In an effort to help save or improve the lives of about 12,000 people over the next 10 years, DonatePlatelets.org Founder Neal Voron submitted an entry/idea to win a grant of $100,000 from the Gannett Foundation via its "A Community Thrives" initiative for the purchase of a single Platelet Donation Collection Station. Voting to determine finalists for grant selection began on April 12, 2017 and continues through May 12, 2017. Voters can vote once per day. The ideas in the Wellness category that get the most votes (top 10) will then be judged to select recipients of grants of $100,000, $50,000, and $50,000, respectively. They are vital for the clotting of blood, so people do not bleed to death... Donation of platelets is critical to save or improve the lives of patients suffering from cancer, leukemia, traumas, surgeries, and other conditions. Platelets cannot be manufactured and must be gathered from people who are willing to donate some of their own. Neal himself is a platelet donor. Through April 2, 2017, he has already donated platelets 9 times this year, helping to save or improve the lives of up to 27 people since each donation can help up to 3 recipients. Life-saving platelets can be donated by an individual donor every 7 days, up to 24 times a year. Platelets have a shelf-life of only 5 days, though, and the need for them is constant. If you or a loved one ever needed platelets, you would want them to be available. Since there is only so much Neal can personally donate himself, he thought that purchasing and enabling another platelet donation collection station would be a great way to help collect more donations from other generous donors to make sure the need for platelets is continually met.
